Thanks to Artery for always bringing the squids at appropriate times! For now, I'm still singing live there every Wednesday at 7pm, Saturdays at 2pm and Sundays at 4pm... come hang with us and see what it's all about :)

It feels like such a relief that at last some vaccines are starting to roll out... in the meantime I hope that you're well and staying safe! If you're looking for fun things to do from home, my new livestreaming schedule is posted above so come hang out... I'd love to "see" you there :) For now I'm playing on Saturdays at 1pm EST on both YouTube and Facebook (at the same time) and three times a week on Twitch. You can watch and listen even if you're not logged in, although you do need to log in to comment, request songs etc. -- which is a big part of the fun! It's free to listen; tips always appreciated but never required :) I'm just getting started on Twitch but I think it's already my favorite -- they have so many super fun ways for performer and audience to interact. Whatever the platform, I hope maybe you'll stop by and say hi sometime soon!

This year has been a lot... and I truly hope this finds you and yours safe and well. It's been quiet here for some time but I have been working on my streaming setup and am happy to say that I'll be returning to livestreaming very soon. It looks like we're going to be hunkering down for a while yet, and I hope to bring you a bit of fun this winter :) I've been doing a few test runs here and there so you may catch me out there any day now... I'll post days, times and locations soon, once I start playing a regular schedule.
Lacy Jamestag:mereminne.com,2005:Post/63407102020-06-03T12:53:35-04:002020-06-03T12:54:28-04:00#theshowmustbepaused
putting my Facebook livestreams on pause for now <3 #theshowmustbepaused #theshowwillbepaused
Lacy Jamestag:mereminne.com,2005:Post/63111812020-05-12T10:31:22-04:002020-12-21T11:23:18-05:00livestream update
Thanks to everyone who's been stopping by my Facebook music page livestreams <3 it's been so lovely to play for you all!

I've been doing these completely unplugged so far -- no mic, no amp, etc.The mandolin in this video is my favorite electric, though, and I like it the best even when it's unplugged. It's been super fun finally to be able to work out some kind of mandolin versions for more of my songs; none of them (so far) were written for the mando and a few of them definitely still have me stumped! But I'm persevering... and very much enjoying sharing that process with you.

In the midst of this distressing time, I have felt so happy to be able to bring a bit of comfort and fun to people. I'd been looking forward to playing some more "in person" concerts... but obviously, right now it's unclear as to when, if, or how we'll be able to return to playing in the same room with others. For now, I'm playing these short sets of originals (and a few covers) every Saturday at 1pm and every Wednesday at 6:30pm (EST) on my Facebook music page -- so stop on by and say hi, if you can :) If you can't make those times, most of the replays are still up for now. It's something that I've wanted to start doing anyway for a long time now... I just didn't have my setup together the way that I wanted yet, and well It seems like now is the time to get started regardless! I'll be livestreaming a short set of originals and covers on my Facebook music page, Saturdays at 1pm and Wednesdays at 6:30pm. Nothing fancy, just me and the mando for now (and if you don't make it live, I usually leave the replays up for a while).

I haven't written a post in so very long, but I figured I would drop a line to say so far, so ok... I'm hunkered down for now.

Since my last post I had mostly been doing a lot of busking, but I've been getting ready to start playing more shows again. At the beginning of March I had the pleasure to join a rockin' bill at The Red Lion on Bleecker Street in the Village during the week-long N.Y.C. Women Rock festival -- it was great to see so many familiar faces :) Many thanks to Val Kinzler and VioLizzy for inviting me on board and for backing me up, along with fab drummer Wizard of ROZ! And thank you to Alan Rand for this great pic :) Got that one in just in time before lockdown... Take care, everyone, and stay safe. Sending much love and strength to wherever you are.

thanks to Alan Rand for the great pic!
Lacy Jamestag:mereminne.com,2005:Post/50279162018-01-21T10:15:48-05:002021-03-12T19:04:54-05:00been busking <3
Some of my most wonderful moments last year occurred during my first ever times busking. Right now it's January, and my fingers don't cooperate well when it's cold outside -- & it's not so great for the mandolin either. I've hardly been out to play since the fall and I am missing it, so I'll take the time now to tell you about some of my busking adventures...

Last May, I was feeling such a need to be out playing more and I finally started going to play in the park, as often as possible. I'd always felt some trepidation at the idea of busking -- my music isn't usually very loud (especially when I play solo); so far, I only know how to play a few covers (and not even that many of my own songs) on the mando; my original songs don't quite fall into a mainstream genre.... overall, I was just afraid that busy passersby would not connect with what I have to offer. But now, I just had to get out there somehow. And -- playing in the park turned out to be perfect for my music. I found a few magical spots under a couple of "secret" archways that add a bit of volume & reverb... I do love reverb :)

There have been so many amazing surprises while busking. I have learned more clearly that each day and each "audience" is different and unpredictable, and that you can't always tell at first whether or not people are into the music. They may not even look over when they pass by, but sometimes if you are brave enough to smile and keep playing and look at them, they will turn and smile (passersby can be shy, too). Other times, people give me big smiles right away, thumbs up, come over with coins, bills, or compliments, ask questions, take pictures, or just stop to talk... you just never know what to expect, and I find joy in all of these. Sometimes I get so emotional from people's responses (especially the children), or from the juxtapositions of the meanings of the songs with the people I'm seeing there, that I struggle not to cry and to keep singing... I am learning to allow these emotions, while continuing on in order to give what I have to give.

A few moments from this past year's busking that I will always treasure:

The tiny child, perhaps younger than two years old, who slowly walked up and stood 3 feet away from me, transfixed and staring up, while I played through three whole songs for him (and the parents who waited to allow this, and then thanked me emotionally afterwards).

The little boy and his mother who sat down on the ground to listen to a whole "set" of 5-6 songs... except for one of them, which got him up twirling and dancing :)

The young men who tossed in golden dollar coins (and the ones who tossed in paper dollars, too)!

The girls who danced their way through the tunnel to "Angel Bells".

The little boy who blew "dust" off the dollar that fell on the ground, before putting it safely into my busking box.

All of the passers by for whom I could feel that a particular song seemed to give something that they really needed, that day.

The young British man who stood leaning against the opposite arch with shades on, unsmiling, and watching, for a whole song... and then who came over and said it was wonderful and that he was going to put me into the book he was writing! I wonder if he will...

The Japanese woman who stopped and said that she plays mandolin also, and she plays in a mandolin orchestra in Japan... I felt shy to play for her but she seemed to enjoy it.. I hope!

Sometimes it's just me and the birds and trees... and I love those moments too.

Here's a little bit of "In the Garden" for you -- in my favorite spot :)

Even though I (so far) haven't been busking in very in-demand areas, I do walk out each time knowing that my spots might be taken, especially during summer weekends. On some days, I still have to make myself go out because I can still feel nervous and/or like I just don't have the energy. But often those days where I feel reluctant at first turn out to be the most wonderful days. It's a profound and magical experience, to feel how music touches people... and I feel so grateful to be able to give this. These moments bring me to the heart of why I'm even creating music... sharing beauty, truth, love... and I get back as much, or maybe more, than whatever I am able to give. Thank you <3 <3 <3
Lacy Jamestag:mereminne.com,2005:Post/43728752016-10-19T20:00:22-04:002020-04-11T10:35:18-04:00Moon Goddess flies twice around the Sun

It's been two years now that I've had the great joy of working with three wonderful female musicians/singer-songwriters as the collective Moon Goddess band... bringing our superpowers together! They see and understand what many others do not. And of course, as a MerMaid... I must echo their words "Mni Wiconi" <3 "Water is Life".

I thought I would tell the story of one of my favorite songs on the new album and how it came to be what it is. Sometimes a song ends up very differently from how you expect, and Today In The City was one of those songs.

After I had moved back to Philly a few years ago, I was going up to NYC fairly often for some dance projects and other business and I would sometimes write on the bus. One sunny morning, the lyrics for this song began to emerge on the way there. I thought of how on any given day in the city you were bound to see unpredictable and sometimes amazing things, and I think I decided that day to write down whatever I saw and see if it could be a song. I seem to remember that the children's book "And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street" came across my mind. On this particular day I had two or three meetings with a lot of time in between, so I was writing in a couple of cafes and other places. When I write it's best for me to have a lot of time to be able to just sit and kind of go into a kind of meditative or contemplative state, almost like a trance, where my mind can wander and find things. On this day there was plenty of time for that, and in the course of the day I did see some strange and unexpected things that found their way into the song. I also was hanging out in a few areas of the city where certain things had happened to me in the past, so some of those found their way in as well -- although the song is poetic and not necessarily literal. It's a mix of some real things with some imagined, and the lyrics have been somewhat abstracted. I think that most of it could really be about any city, or anyone's life.

On that day I saw and remembered a mix of beautiful and horrible things. That's the intensity of the city, in that it's a microcosm of life itself. There was the awareness that time (and the city) moves on, through the beautiful and the horrible. And that life comes back again in places where death has been. And that death is always there waiting as well. It was a way of looking at the whole thing from outside of time, where any one particular event is just one of billions of events, and also recognizing the intense beauty or horror of each thing that might happen.

Once the day was over, I had a long stream of consciousness piece of writing that still needed to be crafted and made into lyrics. And somehow, I had to find a way to write music that would work with these words. I thought, who writes songs like this? And I thought of Bob Dylan's album Time Out of Mind, which I had listened to quite often when it first came out. I thought, he has a lot to say, and so when he tells those long rambling stories like "Highlands" he keeps the music very simple so that the focus will be on the story. The music itself doesn't have to be anything too fancy, and that way it won't distract. So I went back and listened to that song and a few others from that album, and I thought ok, I'll just come up with a simple repetitive kind of bluesy thing kind of like that and see how that goes.

I made something that wasn't really working so well for me but it was a start, and then as I usually do when writing, I wanted to find a sound that would represent to me the feeling of the song. I like to add in such sounds when I'm writing because it helps me continue to complete the song, when I can get some kind of atmosphere going. I found this oozy smoky kind of sound, I felt that it was kind of creeping through the song like a sort of sinister threat, it was smoky so the edges were hazy. The way that life bleeds into and across time.

Then I also needed to figure out what kind of rhythm to use. Originally I had it in 4/4, like the Dylan stuff I was remembering, but eventually I decided to see what would happen if I tried it on 3s -- and then it somehow started to get jazzy. Which was not at all what I had expected! I've recently started getting more into jazz but I really don't know much about it, and I had never really thought about writing or singing any jazz. But here it was, the song was working better in this rhythm and it really started to feel right. So, jazz! And I knew that I probably wanted a smoky sax on it, and I knew just the sound that I wanted. I'd been going to hear my friend Tom Tallitsch's band and was listening to his album Perspective, and I thought that he would bring just the right kind of sound for the song. And now that it had turned into jazz, all the more reason to bring Tom in. I was so happy that he did end up playing on this track.

It was maybe a year or so after I wrote the demo that I found my way to Turtle Studios and began production on the album with Jeff Hiatt. I think that when we started, I didn't quite realize that Jeff had such a strong background in jazz (among other genres). So when we came to lay down the basic tracks for "Today In The City", it was just so exciting for me to hear him on upright bass, with the amazing Charlie Patierno on drums, taking the song to a whole other level. The way they played the rhythm, they took it to a place where it ended up swinging, which my original really didn't. Right away I knew that I would have to take a different approach to the vocal so that was a bit scary for me! I thought, I'm not a jazz singer, I've never done that before, and I'm really not sure if I can pull this off! But I took the tracks home and was able to adjust my phrasing, and even though I don't think I really sound like a jazz singer I think it fits the song.

Another wonderful day was the session when Tony Mascara came in to lay down some vibes. I am just a sucker for ambience, so vibes and their vibes... I could listen to them all day. Tony also brought a bunch of fun junkyard-esque items to add on percussion. Having some hubcaps in there kind of made sense, and it was good to add some harder/sharper/more concise sounds to all of the oozy stuff that we had going on.

After we cut the vocal, another thought I had was that maybe I sounded a little too happy singing about some terrible things. But the vocal is more of a survival thing, a looking at things from outside and seeing life as a whole. The vocal kind of moves along, just like the instruments, through time and through all of the experiences. I guess it's just another part of the juxtaposition which runs through the song, distilling the experience of life with good and bad into one song, one city, one moment out of infinite moments.

(listen to Today In The City)

If you made it out to either or both of these gigs, thank you again for helping to make these two evenings very special!

First was a duo set with myself and Tim Daoust at the cool little "subterranean music parlor" Zirzamin. It was our second booking there, and at midnight it was also my birthday. I really couldn't have thought of a better way to celebrate than playing music for such a wonderful, appreciative group of people. We debuted Tim's new electric mandolin and cracked open Zirzamin's creaky old piano. The only sad note of the night was finding out mid-gig that Zirzamin would be closing the next day :( So we've lost yet another cool venue frequented by the eclectic and intriguing artists of downtown NYC :( we'll miss you Zirzamin. I'm crossing my fingers that we'll see you reborn in another location soon.

Here's a little bit of video from that night:

Then at the end of the month, we played an amazing venue in Philadelphia -- Jamey's House of Music (formerly known as the PSALM Salon). I'd never heard of this place in all the years that I've lived in Philly... apparently, people mostly find out about it through word of mouth and I just happened to hear about it in a musicians' chat room online, while trading tips with an artist from the west coast. After one night at Jamey's I truly understand why everyone loves it -- amazing acoustics and sound, a great audience, delicious homemade Chinese food and more... all I can say is, check out their website and/or better yet, visit them for a show if you're in the area.

I was so happy to finally be playing another full band show with my friends the Beards :) Despite the limited rehearsal time that we were able to have together, this was definitely our best show yet. Below are a few pics from the weekend and a couple of videos from the show. I'll be uploading more footage soon to the live music playlist on our YouTube channel. Many, many thanks to Jamey's for having us, and to all of the musicians and friends who helped to make this evening a very special one.

ZirZamin is a super cool little venue and they have great Austin TX-inspired food as well.

And I'm very psyched that Tim and I will be joined by Tom Fitzpatrick on bass and Brian Weston on drums. Things sounded great at rehearsal today. For this show we won't be using many of the keyboard atmospherics; the sound will be more stripped down than it is on the albums and it's a lot of fun to hear and perform the songs this way. There is also a piano at ZirZamin that we plan to make use of for a song or two. If you're around NYC next weekend, it's going to be a great show so stop by and see us!
Lacy Jamestag:mereminne.com,2005:Post/4479212013-04-01T08:57:00-04:002017-02-01T22:38:47-05:00first big NYC gigWhat an amazing night we had for our album release at Drom. This was the first time that I have played in a larger club, so it was a learning experience but I was so happy with almost everything. The people at Drom were great to work with, and it was fantastic to be there with such stellar musicians and friends. It really meant a lot to me that so many of you came up afterwards to say how much you enjoyed the show. As soon as it was over, all I could think about was doing it again as soon as possible!

And I finally have some video from the night. The sound quality is not the greatest, it's just from the cameras, but maybe a little better than cell phone audio!

Here is probably my favorite one of the night.

We were fortunate not to have flooding or power outages in the part of Brooklyn where I'm currently living, but Sandy impacted all of us in many ways and the devastation wreaked has been astounding. Some of my relatives still haven't been able to move back to Long Beach Island on the Jersey Shore, while other friends have lost their homes completely. Along with the life's work of many other artists based at the Westbeth building in Manhattan's West Village, the Martha Graham Dance company's historic costumes and sets were submerged in 8 feet of water for days and suffered irreparable damage. The company is now trying to preserve whatever they can, from precious costumes worn by Graham herself to sets created by the sculptor Isamu Noguchi.

Here are some links at which you can help:

You may ask why I've included that last one. It links to an organization that fights hard to protect our planet, and their work gives me hope.

Maybe we can't say for sure that Hurricane Sandy was caused by global warming. But we need to protect the environment REGARDLESS of what is or isn't causing climate change. There are so many reasons -- the disappearance of species, the disappearance of natural and "unspoiled" lands, the threats to our food supply by the commercial aims of companies like Monsanto... I can hardly believe that these things have reached the point that they have. When people say that the economy etc. should be more of a priority, I truly wish they could realize that the way we treat our planet is quite directly connected to the economy and to so many other aspects of our well-being.

I remember the gas lines in the 1970s and the consequent banning of station wagons and other gas guzzlers, and how astonished I was to see the later mass popularity of SUVs that seemed to represent an amnesia and/or denial about the environmental concerns brought to light in those earlier years. At the same time there has also been a great increase in awareness about organic, local, and sustainable food, clothing, building, and holistic philosophy; these things give me hope too.

Hopefully this will also include playing in Philly (and elsewhere) and continuing to work with musicians in both cities; we'll see how it all turns out. This week Tim Daoust and I had a great rehearsal and hopefully it won't be long til we have some shows to tell you about.

Afterwards we headed over to Tea Lounge in Park Slope, because Tim knew about an Indian music jam session happening there run by Brooklyn Raga Massive. I am definitely going to have to keep track of that jam in future, because it attracts some world class Indian musicians.
Our third day of shooting took place in Valley Forge National Park. Oddly, I've seemed to be following George Washington around for the past year. We did the first photos for the new album in Washington Crossing State Park, and our Philly Fringe Festival shows happened in Washington Square, Philadelphia. Only that last location was chosen for historical relevance but what's up with these mysterious coincidences...

This has been another epic project and I truly can't say enough about producer Jeff Hiatt, who has gone above and beyond with the time, energy, patience and creativity that he has given to this record. It has been a real joy to work with everyone at Turtle Studios. I hope the songs will bring some of that feeling to you as well!

I come in with a lot of musical ideas and parts already created in my demos, but once we begin work with the live musicians we replace some of those electronic parts -- although we also keep many of them (and write new electronic parts). We collaborate with each musician to develop further whatever was on the demo, and/or to create one or more completely new instrumental lines. This kind of process takes a lot of time and patience as each song gradually grows a world around itself. Then, during mixing we have to figure out what to keep or what else to add, along with all of the other kinds of sonic shaping and refining involved at the mixing stage. Sometimes after listening to something over and over you can lose perspective, so you have to come back to it with fresh ears at another time. Or just put it in a big cave and call it a day.

It was an exhausting, amazing and super fun weekend!

Of course things started long before that, with lots of planning and a Philly dance rehearsal earlier in the week, plus a whole lotta scrambling on my part to get the costumes ready in time. There was some experimental late-night dyeing involved, the results of which seem to have turned out much better than I had thought at first -- especially since the resulting colors ended up fitting amazingly well with our locations.

yum yum! 2 sunflower yellows + 1 terracotta

Once the weekend arrived, after a little more running around looking for elastic and safety pins it was off to Manhattan for a Friday night dance rehearsal that was followed by a visit from our wonderful henna artist Tanaz, who worked her magic as we continued with logistical planning. Our director and cinematographer, as well as our awesome (and awesomely patient) leading man Mughen, came to the rehearsal as well so that we could all meet each other and be ready for what was to come. Once we finally made it back to Queens, where I and another dancer were staying with longtime (and fabulous) Mereminne dancer Rebekah Kennedy, there was only time for about 3 hours' sleep before our alarms went off at 4am -- and the first day of shooting was upon us.

The goal was to meet at the director's place by 6am and then head to our first Prospect Park, Brooklyn location. Once we arrived at Mohammad's apartment I still had to adjust everyone's costumes and makeup, plus add a few more special touches which I won't reveal here so as not to spoil too much.

MunkyTown gets ready to roll

We then set forth into the park to shoot at several different very cool spots that Mo had scouted earlier, spending the most time at one special structure where the first dance scenes took place. On this first day we were shooting four dancers plus our leading man and all performed beautifully, despite the fact that their costumes did very little to protect them from the chill. Our locations were mostly under cover, but at least the sun was out so that they could warm up a bit in between takes!

It was a huge challenge to deter the large numbers of Saturday park-goers from wandering through our shots but we all pitched in, and hopefully there won't be too many random dogs, joggers, kids on bikes etc. in the background of this video... we shall see! We finally ended the first day of shooting around 7pm and headed home to eat, freshen up the costumes and drop into bed asap.

We were only in for about 3 hours of sleep that night as well, though, since we had to be up at 3:30am in order to reach our Manhattan location early the next morning. We met the rest of the dancers (5 on this day) at Big Nick's (open 23 hrs!) on the Upper West Side for a quick breakfast and makeup session, then headed to our big Central Park location. We filmed there from about 7am until 6:30pm and, as we were shooting at one of the very most popular spots in Central Park, you can probably imagine the many challenges we faced on a sunny spring Sunday in keeping our scenes clear of characters that weren't meant to be in the video! There was some kind of big race going on, along with several tour groups, a series of different street performers, and all of the other things that you might expect from the wonderful carnival of life that is NYC. We also had lots of people watching our shoot and taking pictures, so I guess that you might see some spoilers popping up online before this video comes out. The film crew from MunkyTown did a simply amazing job, and the dancers and our leading man gave wonderful performances take after take. I am very grateful that I was able to work with so many of my longtime Mereminne Dancers for this video, along with fabulous new addition Lindsay Poulis; they all did a fantastic job even with very limited rehearsal time. Most of the dancing was improvisation and I knew that I could count on these ladies to bring it... and bring it they did.

I've only been able to watch a few bits of the footage so far, but I can't wait to see the rest. But for now, I'll be washing costumes for a few days! And the title of this blog post? We expect to be shooting at the end of this month, so that means -- yes, I'll be keeping busy in between recording studio sessions. There will be dance in this video so I need to gather and rehearse the dancers, find/make costumes, props, choreography... Meanwhile there is still some work to be done on the other songs, so I guess I'd better keep this short and get back to my (music) keyboard!

There's something undeniably special about recording a whole band at once but it's also really cool in a different way to work with one musician at a time. Each person brings some new magic to the songs. Usually when they first start playing and warming up in the studio, I want to say let's just record them playing their own music! Because they're all so great. It just makes me want to make a whole album of drums, or a whole album of saxophone... someday :) Then when these beautiful people blend their playing into my songs, I'm made even more aware of how each person is contributing a part of their own being to the song. Sometimes music is just so amazing that it doesn't even seem real.

I wanted to share with you the work of some of the most recent guests we've had at our sessions. A couple of weeks ago, Seamus Egan of the awesome Celtic band Solas came by to play on a couple of songs. Here's a great video from Solas where they all seem to be having so much fun.

I first heard about this a few years ago in a lecture given by BioMusic researcher Dr. Patricia Gray at UNC-Greensboro.

The video below shows the bonobos Panbanisha and Kanzi playing the keyboard when Peter visited the Great Ape Trust research center. The bonobos use graphic symbols called lexigrams to communicate with their researchers. The beginning of the video shows lead researcher Sue Savage-Rumbaugh talking with the bonobos about what they are going to do. After Kanzi plays (at the very end of the video) he wants to go out in the room with Peter and Tony Levin -- well, I would too!

Host Wayne Kral is so the man for keeping this night running. Below we are playing one of my favorite songs, Leonard Cohen's "Anthem" -- one of the few covers we've done. We'll be cutting basic tracks for the first song and I can't wait to start bringing this project to life! What is not as exciting is that a lovely summer cold has decided this would be a great time to visit me, even though it's 102 degrees outside today. I hardly ever get a cold but I haven't been able to sing much for the past couple of days and I'm trying to rest up and drink lots of fluids. We probably won't end up using the vocals from this session on the final recording anyway, but the musicians need them for reference and to get the energy of the song -- and you never know when you're going to get something good. So I'd rather be able to sing when the musicians are there! On my first album Lovefeast we had drums, bass, guitars, percussion etc. all in the studio at the same time for "Silverback" and I had a cold then, too, and we couldn't use those vocals. I'm really hoping that won't be the case this time but we'll work it out one way or another.

Another reason to rest is that in a couple of weeks, I'm playing a 40-minute set with Tim Daoust at one of our favorite spots, the back room of Bar 82 in the East Village of NYC. We've been playing the way cool open mic there for a few weeks now and on Wednesday, August 3rd we'll be the featured act starting at 9pm right after the mic. We've been performing all-acoustic so far but are aiming for a mix of acoustic and electric for this show, with lots of songs from Lovefeast plus a few other surprises. I've really enjoyed exploring acoustic versions of the songs and I'm looking forward to doing more of that, but it's exciting to be moving into a fuller sound that's more like what's on the album. Don't know how much time there will be for a sound check but we are ready to go with the flow whatever happens. If you're in NYC stop on by! There's no cover charge, and you'll get to see this:

Yeah it's a disco skull. And if you come early, you might also catch some of the wonderful artists who play the open mic here each Wednesday from 7-9pm or maybe even play something yourself (signup is at 6:30). We'd love to see you if you can make it out!

Lacy Jamestag:mereminne.com,2005:Post/1828742011-07-01T08:52:00-04:002017-02-01T18:12:31-05:00new song out now! I had truly thought that I would be back in the recording studio by this past January. The new songs have been ready to record for quite some time but we are still working out the last details of various logistical stuff. It is going to happen soon though (hopefully, in June)! To keep from getting too frustrated waiting, I decided to focus on live performance in the meantime, so over the past few months my guitarist/composer friend Tim Daoust and I have been developing acoustic versions of some of the earlier songs and taking them out to open mics around Brooklyn and NYC.

It's been a lot of fun, since I've never done acoustic versions of these songs before (except for "White Lion" which was basically written that way). And I hadn't performed my songs live for quite some time, so I have to admit it's also been a little scary getting out there again.

I've posted a couple of these ventures below. I'll have video and performance pics soon and will write a bit more then.

A few more from behind the scenes:

I think it's going to be called We the People. The idea for this dance emerged from one of the songs that I am working on for the new album but the dance took its own direction, as dances tend to do. So as it turns out, I have written another new song for the dance! We showed the work for the first time last weekend at an informal studio performance in Philadelphia. It was my first chance to tape the piece so that I could see how the song and choreography are working together. They seem to fit, at least as one possible version of this dance, so we'll keep the song for our upcoming performances at the Re:Vision Series in New York City next month. I'm still making some adjustments and I don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone coming to Re:Vision... so I'm not going to post too much more about the song yet. I hope that maybe some of you will be able to come see us! The dance is really exploding now, and I have such exciting dancers working with me. I am very grateful to them. They really inspire me.

Lacy Jamestag:mereminne.com,2005:Post/578892011-03-04T06:52:00-05:002011-03-04T06:52:00-05:00jammin' in BK

I am so impatient to get into the recording studio! but we have to wait for scheduling, etc. so for now I've been working up some tunes to get out and do some gigs with my friend Tim Daoust. We're trying out some different angles with the songs, in both electronic and acoustic configurations, in order to start taking them out around NYC and hopefully beyond. I wasn't able to tour behind the first album after being swallowed up by dance back then, so it is really exciting to be working on different possibilities for doing those songs live now.

It's wonderful working with Tim because he can go in any direction that we might want to take this, having a background in electronic music as well as rock and classical/new music composition (among other things). The Re:Vision Series, hosted by Forward Motion Theater, features mixed media and interdisciplinary artists, so we will be expanding the piece into new dimensions and my brain is spinning like mad with ideas! So far we've been working with the dance in silence, but I'm thinking about creating an electronic score for these performances or incorporating spoken word... or maybe, singing. And/or possibly, video of some kind. It's quite a challenge to add such elements right now, since I'm really enjoying the simple rawness of the movement we've been making and have been thinking more in terms of showing the dance outdoors and in simple studio spaces at the beginning. But this is a great opportunity to try some new ideas for the work and to be part of an interesting show. Anyway, we'll see what happens! More details about the show are listed on our website Calendar.

Lacy James
